Not strictly your happy place but......

August 12 2011

Today I had to drive several hours out to a tiny little country town for a regional meeting. It has been a while since I actually drove off the beaten paths and highways and as I was driving along enjoying the serenity and zero traffic I took stock of where I was in my life, where I wanted to be and how far I had to go to get there yet. I made plans and revised my one and five year plans in my mind at the same time. I got to thinking that I always enjoy the country and being out there always gets me to thinking and planning more clearly. An empty beach on an overcast and windy day is another such place. Where do the rest of you go when you need to clear the clutter and give clarity to what needs to be done? Do any others have a place that works like that?

Great topic fionabee!!! Having lived most of my life in country areas I can relate to how relaxing being in the country can be. I found a couple of secluded spots in my home town to sit and ponder, one of them was on top of a hil, about an hours drive away so I would sit on the bonnet of my car and over look the vastness of the landscape. Now that I live in a regional city, i head to the nearest beach which fortunately most times is relatively empty! Theres nothing like a country drive to but your life in perspective.I love long drives and thats often when I do my best thinking!!!

I don't have a specific place to ponder (the husband speaking here). I just pick up my paintbrush, whack on the earphones, and turn up some music that suits my mood. I get all my thoughts and plans in order while painting.

I am a bit like Miss_CC, we have a granite outcrop of rocks on a big hill just 800 meters from our front door.I sometimes enjoy going up there just before dusk and taking in the 360 degree views around including our property.Always manages to soothe the soul.(we have even had a bit of a photo session there too!!). Have witnessed a couple of amazing electrical storms on balmy summer evenings also. This is my special place Mr Luvsilver

... I love a desolate beach on a wintery day, sharing it only with the gulls and occasional tern. I can retreat within myself and reflect on life, a type of meditation where nature soothes my worries and concerns and if I am lucky, returns to me some kind of answer and guidance.

fionabee and Miss_CC, I agree completely re the country drives. Great way to clear the mind and ponder life's imponderables. Another of my fave's though is to head about an hour west of me to a great little fishing spot I know and just drop a line in the water. Nothing finer than sitting back with the wind soughing through the trees, the calls of birds, the splash of the odd fish on the rise and if I am really lucky, a white tailed water rat or maybe a platypus frolicking in the water. I can lose hours just sitting there looking at the insect life both in and on the water and flitting through the grasses. If I am feeling a little more athletic I might wander along with the fly rod, flicking the fly into those little hidey holes where the trout like to sit or letting the line drift along with the current. To be honest I don't really care if I catch a fish most times. I often see snakes and lizards dart off into the undergrowth and have startled foxes and rabbits on several occasions. I come home feeling like I have just been on a two week holiday. Love the bush. Kisses all,L

I was born and bred in the inner city of Sydney and never left it really for a variety of reasons and circumstances. I find when I need to think or find some peace or solace I go for a walk in a particular park. It tends to work the best for me. Particularly on things that are life changing decisions that need to be made or simply to get myself back on an even keel. Cissy

Walking along the empty beach, earphones in, singing along into the wind so nobody can hear me LOLOr a drive down a shady leafy road. I can't just go somewhere and sit, i like to be moving/walking/driving.xx Sarah

We seem to need to connect with nature of some sort. The beach and the country. Curiousnewgirl. I cant sit either. I like to wander with my thoughts. Sometimes a secluded and rough beach is okay for sitting and staring out at nothing but both sides of the brain are open if we use our major muscle groups and that is why walking makes it easier for brain activity. I dont use music though as I personally find it intrusive. I like the sounds of nature when I am thinking.

and it makes me itchy. LOLI find that i connect with certain lyrics and it usually just kind of 'happens' that a song will come on that says just how i'm feeling at the time, that connection leads to further thoughts, etc. It just works for me. :Dxx Sarah

Th noise and the lights tend to drown out all the white noise in my mind. | Besides, every now and then you might run into a half-drunk hot chick that you know and well, life's good. Photos upon request...but only to selected friends. |

I work on the assumption that people'd be less likely to come near me if I didn't use toilets, but maybe I'm wrong...And for me the toilet is the only place in the house the kids know better than to bother me. Hence the serenity...

I would have though a river bank somewhere with the odd chance of cathing a trout would have brought you more serenity and calm than a casino. How wrong can one be.

...as one of the more infamous females here was across the street at the Crown one night. The little tart was drinking and teasing me as I was working in the Rialto. | Where I would really be would be so far off up in the mountains not even a bloodhound could find me...4 days so totally gone and everything I need in a small ruck sack in my back. Old habits die hard. | I wouldn't go anywhere near a lake either...somebody might jump out and grab me then I would have to...well, I am trying to relax so most likely would wander by a river.

...who wanders around the edge of a lake until some dumb shit critter who thinks it's a predator jumps out. A lot of times the grizzly just swats the annoying thing in the head to see how far it will fly...it leaves the rest of the carcass there for the vultures and the rodents. Darwin's theory...and more fun for the grizzly. | The high mountains are home to both grizzlies and cougars...both prefer to hunt for food but either will hunt strictly for the thrill of the kill now and then. | Never walk in the woods alone unless you know what you're really up against.

When I was younger there was nothing better than surfing, the absolutely best way to relax, open the headspace and let the ideas flow. Now my eyesight is crap without glasses (old eye injury caught up with me) and I can't do contacts so not being able to see the damn waves isn't very relaxing at all.Like Nick, the shower is a great place but I try not to dwell there being the big greenie I am lol.My mind races most of the time so I find to clear it I have to do something that takes total focus yet is immensely enjoyable. I find a nice technically challenging drive does the trick for me. Can't think while concentrating but having to concentrate on the task allows me to forget the rest and after I have space to think.

The biggest surf I can find at an empty beach............. sometimes I can just sit out the back for ages not thinking about surfing just drifting around, watching sets roll through and tacking the pick wave when I want it......................Nothing quite like it for me............

Those folks at the Crown hire that creature from the depths of Lake Lagoon to come and lick the windows clean once a week. Cheaper than Windex...| ...and it doesn't piss off the grizzly bears.

i second briscple, and damn someone was generous with your proportions, lucky guy, it can be anywhere, sitting on the beach(my favourite), in the middle of a rainforest,or even a quiet room in the house, it isnt so much about the place, but the mindset you reach in that place, if you can reach that mindset where ever you are, the rest of life is cake

FIRE!   Give me an open fire to stoke and I can gaze away for hours. Being married to a pyromaniac helps! We love nothing more than sitting around the fire with our dogs. There can be very long, confortable, periods of silence followed by brainstorming, laughter, sex or all of the above..
