The men I've known refused to go out of fear something would be wrong with them that they couldn't fix. . Yes, I'm in pain, I'm losing heaps of weight, I'm coughing up blood and turning yellow. But as long as no one tells me it's serious, it's not serious and I'm fine.

"Suck it up princess" and "It's only a scratch, stop being a wus" are prominent in the reasons for not going... men are supposed to be tough and not get hurt aren't they? (at least that's what our dad and school mates teach us) Agree... the fear of going to the doctor is a big factor to men not living as long as women on average. SG

The same can be said for emotional help as medical help... too much bottled up angst can kill you and men fear sharing as much as visiting the doctor! SG

Who needs some poof doctor poking and prodding at me??? Lol happy now?? :p Ok in all seriousness, I like my doctor, we've spoken about some perculiar topics, and stuff, but I don't really know why I don't. But fear is one thing that I must admit is part of it. Fear of finding something that is seriously wrong that I didn't know about. And prostate checks.....fuck prostate checks lol - Posted from rhpmobile

I was just amazed at that guy last night though. I mean, for the majority of men having a normal, functioning penis is pretty highly rated yes? Surely then, hearing it snap, then having it turn black and the head to slide off when you get a hard on (that's pretty much how he described it) would be enough to send you running to the nearest ED??!!

What I don't understand is that people don't do anything about their knobs, and the other awful issues they have until it because am enormous problem ............... so when does going on national TV and telling everyone how foolish they are and showing everyone their pink bits become a good idea?

Comes from growing up around doctors. What they don't know is frightening. I'll generally self diagnose first then think about going to a quack. Due to working on cattle stations, I've had a number of injuries, some requiring medical assistance including a fight with the Royal Flying Doctors ( they are amazing ), but the majority of the time I could administer first aid to myself. If I'm sick, I deal with it, doctors just want to fill you up with pills. As I've got older, I have started to get check ups, irregullarly. Mainly because it's not something I think of. Actually, it's been a while. Thank you for the reminder Luckydragon, I'll call tomorrow for an appointment for a full check up.

I had to deal with regular injuries when I was playing football , so nothing really phases me these days. Besides our club doctor, I had my own personal doctor who kept such good records , she knew more about me than I did myself. I have my regular prostrate check ups every year, and my doctor insists on a full blood test covering everything. I'm not one of these guys to ignore something in hope it will disappear . Best you get the facts and deal with anything that comes your way... Waiting or ignoring can and will kill you if you stick your head in the sand... The peace of mind alone is well worth it..

They usually don't like a man to look at their bits, or a random female incase it stands to attention. There is also an added factor that doctors keep wanting to stick their finger up their bum. Lol - Posted from rhpmobile

There are plenty of women's profiles on here that just drool over a large black cock so I guess he is half way there-lol On a more serious note. I am also someone that does not go to a doctor often-probably 3 times in the last 3 years. My visits are more out of necessity than check ups. More and more I am finding that I walk out of the doctors feeling none the wiser than before. A few times Mrs Luv has been on my case about getting a some moles checked out on my back. While I was in there I felt as though I was wasting both his time and mine- he was running behind and I could tell he really did not want to be doing a simple check. Same thing has happened with a knee complaint on another occasion. So for me it is nothing about being a tough guy or worrying about what I might be told but more so sick of getting the run around and not getting any answers. Mr Luvsilver

It's not a river in Egypt . If I don't know , it won't hurt me . The power of Suggestion . If someone tells me I've got a week to live , then I'll probably only live for a week . If I'm not told , then I don't know & there's a big chance I'll live longer. As far as a wounded dick goes , there's not many Men who feel comfortable exposing themselves to a bunch of strangers . There's nothing worse than showing your Doctor and then they go and grab a whole bunch of other Doctors to have a look at your rare condition . No doubt they'll all be laughing about it in the canteen . Many Men refuse to accept that they are not Indestructible . Illness is a sign of weakness and can be Emasculating . However , if a Man gets the Flu , he lets everyone know about it ... ;) GG♒️ - Posted from rhpmobile

I don't have the same mindset, but I do share the same thought that some doctors give off the vibe we're wasting their time, some doctors just want to rush you out the door. The fact that we have to ask for herpes screening during STI checkups, and a few docs have become "less than professional" when I've mistakenly felt comfortable enough stating I have multiple sexual partners. I get really concerned if things don't look right down there, and I'll do something about it but I can understand why more bashful guys won't after those experiences. - Posted from rhpmobile

Quite happy to pay $62 to go i to a GP I'm considering utilising for illness and suss him and his responses out. Lol have done this 4 times in that last .....hmmm 13yrs. My family have a wonderful Dr who has seen us all though thick and thin. When I moved to Sadrock I wanted to maintain that level. The Dr's I have had here have been brilliant!! And during the interview I do stipulate "I don't want you to give me pills and send me on my way, I want you to know what you're dealing with and not treat me or my family like another $62 visitor in and out the door but actually care about the care you're giving us." Some are taken aback then smile the successfully utilised ones always smile and laugh when I visit. Now my question to the Gentlemen "Wouldn't you rather KNOW what's going on so it can be fixed/treated than suffer in silly silence?" You know 99% of the time it's going to be nothing serious 😃 and you can save yourselves alot of pain and discomfort if caught earlier. My Daddy has some back pain atm, Mum and Dr Phil (yup, lol) organised for him to have some ultrasounds done and then for a cort injection in his spine that'd relieve him. He wouldn't go. When asked why "Because it'd hurt." Now he winces and moans and Mum just says "Well Dad you could've had it fixed I've got no sympathy for you." Lol poor Daddy, but he is his own worst enemy!! On a personal note, I'd rather see all you gorgeous guys safe, well and happy so please don't be silly where your health is concerned. 🌺 - Posted from rhpmobile

Mr Luvsilver Well, I would suggest that is more to do with the quality of the GPs you are seeing. Which is obviously an important issue - I've seen quite a few GPs over the years and yes, there are many who treat you little better than a piece of shit on their shoe. No wonder some people avoid doctors after having those experiences. It really can make all the difference if you can find a good one, who really does listen and make an effort for you.

Im guilty of this many times. Its the fear of the worst. That our life is about to be over. I tore my ACL in a game of basketball. Instead of going to find out, I kept playing to get the scholarship. Ended up tearing it right off and needing a full recon and being redflagged. - Posted from rhpmobile

Agree with mesmerised. I have hurt my knee at footy a few years ago, I know it swells and aches after running. And I can't twist or jump off it. But I just restrict myself and manage it I will be fine. I don't really wanna know what is wrong with it in case I need an op or time off work. I need my income to cover my bills. Also got a few other little niggles but hey you get that But when I go to the doctor I do walk in with a list to make my time worth while

Or you injure it further at work? Not to mention the way that you currently have to manage and restrict your activities. At this stage you may well have other options for treatment that are less costly, may not necessitate any time off work at all, and will let you start doing your normal activities again. I know if it was me I would rather address it now than end up needing more drastic treatment down the track. And I guess that illustrates the different views that men and women have of these things.

As I said is awesome. He referred me to the sleep dude that told me I stop breathing once every 3 minutes. He also referred me to a skin bloke and wow....had 3 stitches in my groin of all places after a melanoma check was done, photographed, and I was drawn on like a kids blackboard....benign by the way... Oh....and....the ladies at pathology thought I was quite the interesting character when I had my ECG, STI/STD blood test, and piss in the cup. - Posted from rhpmobile

A couple of weeks ago on Embarrassing Bodies DU there was a guy who didn't realise how loudly he snored, and his wife got him to see the GP. He was referred for a sleep assessment and turns out that he had severe sleep apnoea - he would stop breathing hundreds of times a night, hence was always tired during the day. He was given one of those masks to wear while he sleeps.

Yes I was actually. And I have a wee little mask for when I sleep too :) The machine I purchased was $2200. The cigarette lighter power supply $150(couldn't make my own thanks to a uncommon plug or it have been $25 from jaycar or similar), $300 for the mask, and $100 for the extended warranty. Can I just say, a machine that has changed my life :) - Posted from rhpmobile

Hey, I don't want to sound alarmist and I know it seems hard to imagine at your age but you have to think about when you turn 50, 60 or 70. Things that you do and don't do know can have a big impact on how you age. For example your knee and they way you are using other muscles to overcompensate for your injury could lead to arthritis when you are older for example, and could mean that you wear away your knee bone before it's time and maybe even your hip. I am not a doctor but I know what you are doing isn't a good idea. You need to invest now for later.

With the internet you can research and self diagnose your problems, and unless its serious there won't really be a need to consult with a doctor. Using the internet to research, being able to recongise and define how serious the injury is, it makes it easier to go see the doctor as you'll understand the serverity of the injury.

Stay away from DR Google, usually symptoms that you display are blown out to something deadly if you dont research it right. I am not afraid of the medical profession but I did not listen to them when I was young so here goes.I have sleep apnoea guys or gals for that matter if you snore and you breath irregularly and you keep your partner awake as they are more worried about you then themselves get it checked out.And no weight loss is not a cure if you have a big neck even fit or skinny people have it.That alone fixed up a whole bunch of things in my life, digestive burn, stomach ulcers all the symptoms no ulcers etc.Reconstructed Knee at the age of 51 the operation and damage was a lot more extensive than what the MRI showed and have recoverd to 80% of former capability, but no pain now except arthritis. Heres the thing if I had the operation when I was young instead of self medicating or getting drunk 5 nights a week to get rid of the pain, I would have been ok, that missing 20% is a lot of capabilty cant run, and its frustrating learning how to dance again its more difficult and I move like a right dork these days. The liver lecture stopped drinking at the age of 26 as I was informed I had an enlarged liver and if I kept up my drinking I would die a young man so I listened and stopped, but was told that in my 40s blood pressure and the like would crop up and they were right again. But my body switched on a gremlin that was devious to say the least I produce too much adrenaline pushes up blood pressure to unbelieveable levels affects 1 in 100,000 and the initial treatment made me impotent with over medication to treat the symptoms, took 5 years to get me near right and I asked questions of my GP and specialists and to their credit they answered them even if it was something I did not want to know in language I understoodThere in is an answer to a lot of guys reservations, thinking they are dumb if they ask questions. The medical profession also has a role to play if they dont explain in laymans terms what your symptoms are doing to you, what you have to do, and what treatment they are going to give you to get over your ailment, men then think its all ok.And finally I got diagnosed with Bipolar 2 at the age of 50, knowing now what causes it, apparently wired up a bit differently in the head. Knowing what triggers off depressive episodes and taking the right meds has helped me big time and I am also not scared to talk about it or write about my experinces as my friends said they thought it was a mood I was in, little did they know, how bad those mainly self destructive thoughts were during those moods. But above all unless you know what you are looking for NO Dr GOOGLE.

I think if there were more doctors out there who can actually relate to people using some empathy and compassion, instead of thinking about the $$$ they're getting from the patient's visit, more people would have no qualms about seeing their doctor more regularly. One female doctor who I'd seen for regular pap smears recently told me I'm "obsessed" about my health and I "worry too much" after seeing her about a lump near my armpit which has been there for some time. She then says it's just a lymph node that's become enlarged then writes me out a referral to a breast surgeon since she no longer wants to deal with me since I'm supposedly "delusional" about my health. You would think that knowing now that 1 in every 8 women being diagnosed with breast cancer on a daily basis would be enough to be alarmed about any lump I notice in my breast region. As for men, I once worked for a boss who said he would never go to the doctor to get his prostrate gland checked. I just shook my head. You guys should be getting your prostrates checked every 2 years , just the same as women get their pap smear tests done every 2 years. Putting your pride aside for a little examination from a doctor (who's most likely done it hundreds of times before) to potentially save your life from cancer makes so much more sense to me.......

Totally agree about Dr Google shaka....unfortunately people think that 30 minutes of internet research makes them an expert, and can match up to 6 + years of training and study. This is actually something that is becoming a problem worldwide, because people no longer really respect the study and training that professionals do and they think the internet can tell them everything. Thing is, there is a lot of bogus information on the internet, and unless you have the knowledge to be able to filter it you're likely going to end up believing a whole lot of crap. Also a lot of medical problems have very similar symptoms, so you run the very likely risk of either thinking that you're going to die when it's actually nothing serious, or even worse, thinking it's not serious when it actually is. Yes the internet can be a great tool, but you should never rely on it to self-diagnose. Accept that there are people who know more than you do. Find out for sure what the problem is, then google it.

If nurses wore those sexy skimpy uniforms you can buy at the sex shop with high heels and fish net stockings that would help us men going to see the Dr! What turns me off about going to see the Dr is the long waiting time, the fact they hand out antibiotics for anything ,and the way i feel like i have just been anal probed when he hands me the invoice.I go to the Drs when i am really sick tho. Its because we think we are bullet proof and nothing can harm us.

To me it has nothing to do with pride, I just don't like to waste people's time if I don't think it's serious, usually figure "she'll be right" which has backfired in the past have dislocated my shoulder and tore tendons in there (still went to work too) And another time I stuffed my knee and never went, still gives me grief now... You guys in your 20s with knee problems, that is just the sort of thing I'm talking about. Knees are very complex things. You might be able to get by now but as you get older you'll just do more and more damage, until you end up needing more drastic treatment, perhaps even a full reconstruction, with all the associated costs and time off work and rehab. Isn't it better to have it addressed now than to just ignore it and end up with a big problem a few years down the track??

I've recently just had a few carbon fibre and titanium pieces of hardware installed in my back which was due to years of abuse, being a builder, falling off my motocross bike etc. A recent injury bought it all to reality where the only way to fix the damage, past and present was to operate. Thanks to modern science, an awesome sugeon and lots of morphine I'm now back in top form. However if I had a choice about going through the op and rehab I'd have to say, looking after myself better when I was younger would have been by far the better move. My suggestion to anyone that has niggling issues now is to get them sorted and think about what lies ahead if you don't. Good topic Luckdragon! L_G

Problem is though that you go to a general gp and they are most of the time next to useless. So it's pretty vital you go to a GOOD specialist, sometimes I wish I was happy to sit at home and play computer games all day, no chance of injuries there....
